Transitioning into a new season is always tricky, but the change from summer to autumn always feels especially daunting. There’s that back-to-school feeling in the air, and all we want to do is nest, make our homes ultra-cosy and settle into a window view of the falling leaves outside.
We love to talk about the power of mixing up your home accessories each season. It needn’t be expensive – you can absolutely implement small tweaks to your living space to give it the visual freshen up you need, while also meeting the different demands a new season brings.
We popped over to Homesense in Blanchardstown this week to get inspired by autumn’s new trends and shop the home pieces we’ll be adopting ourselves. So, here’s a peek at what we found, a roundup of trends we think you’ll want to try yourself, and the tips and tricks to ensure you transition into autumn as smoothly and stylishly as possible.
Tone Transition
One of the most obvious changes as we move into autumn is the kind of colours we crave to wear and see in our living spaces. It’s suddenly less about rainbow brights and tropical prints and more about rich burgundy, terracottas and colours that’ll inject warmth and rejuvenation rather than energy. Oranges and yellows are the obvious choices ( reflective of those falling leaves we mentioned earlier) but black is also a really cool colour to consider. Hear us out, OK? We are talking about small hints of the dark hue, like this selection of lighting we spotted (love these pendant lamps) or this patterned vase. Of course, you’ll need to balance it out in the room with some brighter pieces, but come on – if we’re not experimenting and trying something new each season where’s the fun? Better to incorporate black hints now while we still have that beautiful autumnal light, rather than in the dead of winter when we need a brighter piece to energise us, too.

Natural touch
The nod to all things natural continues this autumn, which means adding or including any pieces that are made from natural fabrics or materials is bang on trend. We love how grounding having these real accessories can be in a room, and we couldn’t get enough of the wide selection at Homesense – everything from oversized baskets of every colour and shape to smaller pieces like bowls (perfect for your coffee table) and picture frames (a small, inexpensive and sentimental way to update your mantelpiece or inhabit that bare wall).

Ground-breaking
We are looking downward for this next tip. If you have the budget (or the headspace) to change just one thing in your living space for autumn, make it a rug. No matter the size of your room, a new rug – big or small – is a key detail that can pull an entire space together. It creates a sense of space, it makes a room cosy and it’s just one of those small, simple changes that can up your room’s cool factor in an instant. We snapped a few of our favourites at Homesense below. Oh – and if you’re in need of a practical way to keep a room cosier this fall, check out these doorstoppers. They’re a gorgeous way to keep a draft at bay.

Super-size it
Bigger is better this autumn, as we reject the regular and look for the larger-than-life. We are talking about these giant vases and jugs, of which we are gathering quite the collection. Pop one on a centre table, a bookshelf or a mantlepiece for a super minimalist look that’ll pack a punch. We love.

Feature fixture
If you can be tempted … we found a couple of stand out feature pieces that we adored in store. This green velvet pouffe and this fuzzy stool are both investment pieces worth indulging in. Both of these say hygge to us in all the right ways. These two are top of our new season wishlist. And as for that pink armchair? Though pink mightn’t strike you as the most autumnal tone, this chair can be made seasonally appropriate with the addition of a faux sheepskin throw. It’s a piece just begging to be Instagrammed – we are obsessed.

Making scents
Changing up your home fragrance with the seasons is a sophisticated way to change your home’s vibe in an instant. There are always so many scented candles and diffusers to choose from at Homesense, so we took a snapshot of a few beautifully presented ones – another way to include a little nod to black, as we mentioned before.

Floral finish
Autumn time doesn’t mean we must wave goodbye to our greenery. Go faux and pick up some seasonal flowers so you can let the summer live on in your homes. These faux blooms are very fall-worthy and this little pot plant will brighten up any unused living room corners.
