Time to introduce you to The Good Room. We’re probably more used to hiding behind our computer screens, but this summer we took GAFF offline and into the real world, with The Good Room. It’s a new series, live now on the RTE Player, and in it, we travel the length and breadth of the country doing room makeovers.
The inspiration behind it? Well, we think every Irish household has that one room that we pretend doesn’t exist; it’s a room that can turn into a bit of a dumping ground. For us, it’s where we store our laundry and piles of cushions (because we have that many) and we’d HATE for a guest to ever set foot in there. But with the housing crisis, as it is in Ireland, every square inch of real estate is hugely valuable, and we need to make the most of it. It’s a complete waste to have a room in your house that’s never used, and most of us shy away from doing it up because we think it will be hard work or an effort or just too difficult. Well, it isn’t. It’s doable in less than 48 hours if you’re up for the challenge.
In each episode of The Good Room, we head to one Irish homeowner’s house and help them to create their good room. The series was made in association with Moda by Dulux and paint is our first port of call for each project. We start by choosing the appropriate colour palette for our homeowner and the room in question. We get down and dirty in our painting gear and then it’s time to bring the room to life with a mixture of new and old furniture pieces and plenty of accessories.
With the help of the homeowner, we take the fear out of painting – because for some people it’s too daunting a task.
But remember, we – Caroline and Jo of GAFF Interiors – are not professional decorators by any means; we’re simply interiors loving journalists and stylists and we were prepared to get to work. Now, we’re working on decor projects all over the country, helping both businesses and home owners to realise their ideal good room scenario.
