As lockdown continues, and dining or drinking outside of our living rooms feels more and more like a distant memory, it’s no wonder tablescaping is having a major moment right now.
In case you missed it, tablescaping is the art of creating a seriously stunning dining table setting. and the more over the top the setting, the better. Stylist legends like Irish-born Londoner Fiona Leahy who have been leading the way with extravagantly layered plating patterns and hand-drawn menus have inspired loads of us to ditch the drab linen tablecloth for something a little more creative.
Cue Peacock & Co is a new Irish luxury tableware company who rent and sell curated tablescapes and inspirational luxury tableware. Founded by best friends Elaine Mackenzie-Smith and Monique McGahon, the pair’s passion for design and good food has informed the exquisite selection they stock. So, when it comes to experts tips on creating the perfect tablescape, there’s no better duo to ask.
Why did you decide to start Peacock & Co?
“We appreciate great design and how beautifully crafted pieces can make you feel. We were frustrated by the limited options available in Ireland and set out to create luxury tableware collections, to inspire and entice. We offer the perfect dining experience, in a convenient and affordable package, with options for rent or purchase, depending on individual requirements.”
With us all being cooped up at home, why do you think people are looking to make a splash with their table settings?
“People are sick of looking at the same four walls every day and are beginning to get restless. Tablescaping has become popular as it is the perfect opportunity for people to get creative. A beautifully laid table can transport guests into a place that stimulates not only the senses but also the imagination and emotions. It allows guests to escape the realities of their daily lives for a few blissful hours.”
What are some of the biggest trends emerging this year when it comes to tableware and table settings?
“Colour is the biggest trend, for sure. Everyone is tired of plain and neutral colour palettes and want to inject colour onto their tables whether that is through beautiful plates, coloured glassware, or feminine table linen. Gold cutlery is a huge trend as again, people want more options that just silver all the time. Coloured and twisted candles are en vogue as it’s allowing people to express their creativity!”
What are some of your favourite pieces?
“We love our glassware and our custom-made gold cutlery. People can use these every day and appreciate the design and quality. We also love our coloured 100% Irish linen napkins which are made by Enrich & Endure, a gorgeous linen company based in Northern Ireland.”
What kinds of occasions do you recommend our readers use your pieces and collections for?
“We want to encourage people to come together to share food, stories and to make memories together, whether that is to celebrate a birthday, christening, a small wedding or even to jazz up date night at home in lockdown. During level 5 restrictions, we are offering all our luxury tablescape collections to to rent for 2 guests whereas normally they are only available to rent from 4 – 20 guests.”
Your dining accessories are so unusual. Where do you source your beautiful pieces from?
“Our tablescape collections have been professionally designed and carefully curated from the highest quality tableware manufacturers in Europe to create a luxury offering that is truly unique. We have four collections to choose from: Landscape, Flowerscape, Seascape and Dreamscape. If you fall in love with something you see, you’ll be delighted to hear that all of our items are available to buy individually in our shop on our website also.”
Any tips for first-time renters?
“Plan ahead. Think about what a lovely experience means to you, whether that’s planning out your menu or deciding to get a really nice meal kit delivered. Once you’ve chosen which tablescape collection you are going to rent, plan some nice little extra personal touches such as fresh flowers to compliment, some coloured dinner candles, or your favourite playlist, get creative!”
